For me, theatre is more than entertainment. It is able to teach us about a number of things like life, people, relationships and issues such as racism and poverty. And what a great way to learn while you are having fun! For the same reason, Every Rose… was made to entertain but also to teach. Inspired by the original story of Cinderella, the play touches upon the important issue of verbal abuse with Cinderella being the victim and the ugly sisters being the abusers. As the story unfolds, Cinderella, not being able to take the abuse anymore, decides to take revenge on her stepsisters. However, Every Rose… does not follow typical fairy tale devices such as presenting the heroes/heroines as utterly good and the villains as utterly evil. This is because life is not that simple. Both good and evil can be found equally inside us but it is our actions that determine who we are. Every Rose…, therefore, is written and directed to portray the dark side of Cinderella as well as the good side of the sisters. In addition to this, the play poses the following questions: How do we deal with verbal abuse? Should people treat their bullies the same way they treat them? Is revenge the answer? What makes someone a bully? The answers are up to you!!
As a final note I would like to thank all the people who helped us with this production and made our visions into reality! Special thanks to Charlotte Wood, Oliver Hichisson, Paris Lindon-Hall, Tim Jeffs, Gary Moseley, Oliver Hull, and the Tech Team at LPAC and Dr. Dominic Symonds.
Thank you for coming and we hope you enjoy the show!
